Definition Sling

Slinging equipment connects lifting equipment (e.g. rope and chain drives, hoisting ropes, hoisting chains) or load-bearing equipment to the load. Load-bearing attachments can be active (e.g. telescopic forks, roller conveyors, hook or lifting slings, cross beams, clamps and grippers, drum lifters, special tongs, transport frames) or passive load-bearing attachments (LAM). Passive load-bearing attachments do not have their own drive. The load is lifted by guide pins or simply placed on smooth surfaces. Examples of slings

  • The two of them
  • ropes
  • lifting straps
  • lifting slings
  • anchor ropes
  • slung chains
  • Round slings (with steel cable insert, with yarn insert)
  • detachable connecting parts (shackles, swivels)

Slinging regulations

The regulations governing slings are set out in the rules of the employers' liability insurance association.

DGUV rules:

100-500 Chapter 2.8: Load-bearing equipment in hoisting operations 109-004: Round steel chains as slings in hot-dip galvanising plants 109-005: Gebrauch von Anschlag-Drahtseilen 109-006: Use of fibre ropes for securing loads When load-bearing equipment is used, the operating instructions must be observed. The employer must ensure that the operating instructions are available for consultation at any time in an easily accessible location. Only persons who are familiar with this task may be assigned to use load-bearing equipment independently. Further slinging regulations stipulate that the employer must ensure that no persons are endangered when load-bearing equipment is used. The shipper must provide documentation at the place of use showing the load capacity, the dead weight of the load-bearing equipment, the capacity of the load-bearing equipment for bulk goods and the minimum load for self-priming vacuum lifters. Slinging regulations also stipulate that load-bearing equipment must not be loaded beyond its load capacity.

Inspection of slings by a sling expert

Who is qualified to inspect slings?

A qualified person for the inspection of lifting equipment requires a competence test in accordance with BetrSichV §2 (6) and the ArbschG §7. This expertise can be acquired in seminars. In these seminars the legal basics and physical basic concepts will be taught. Participants will be given the tasks, rights and obligations of a qualified person for the a39> inspection of lifting gear explained and the maintenance and a46> storage of slings explained.

  • A slinging expert must inspect load-bearing equipment before it is put into service and rectify any defects found.
  • This examination must be repeated regularly at intervals of one year.
  • After damage that may affect load-bearing capacity, the slings must also be re-inspected.

An expert in slings subjects the slings and load-bearing equipment to a visual and functional inspection. When inspecting slings, the following defects are checked for:

  • kinking
  • fractions
  • bruises
  • corrosion scars
  • relaxations
  • damage
  • wear
  • wire breaks

If such defects or slings that are ready for disposal are found during an inspection of the slings, they must be rectified immediately.

Inspection of slings

Lifting straps testing and round slings testing made of chemical fibres ifting straps and round slings made of chemical fibres must be inspected annually by a qualified person for the purpose of inspecting of lifting gear checked by. Slinging equipment made of chemical fibres must be checked during use for obvious defects checked at all times. If safety-related defects are found during the - and round slings inspection detected, may the chemical fibre straps not continue to be used under any circumstances.
Inspection of slings: lifting straps with vulcanised sheathing Lifting straps with vulcanised covering must at least every three years of a special lifting strap test undergo be. This must check whether the lifting straps show any wire breaks or corrosion.
Inspection of lifting gear: round steel chains Round steel chains must at the latest after three a5> years a special inspection by slings be subjected to. During this test, the round steel chains are checked for cracks.

Readiness for removal of slings

Definition: Sling Ready for harvesting Slinging equipment does not have an expiry date. Slinging equipment may be used until certain wear limits are reached. These limits are regulated in DIN EN 121952-4. When white slack ready to be cut on?

  • Lashing wire ropes must be discarded if wear due to abrasion exceeds 10% of their thickness. The press clamp is damaged, there is significant wire breakage, there is significant rust formation, or if the lashing wire ropes show kinks or crushing.
  • One slip is likely to occur in lashing chains if the following conditions are met, if the thickness of a chain link is more than 10% decreases or if the chain link stretches by at least 5% .
  • Tension belts must be discarded if there are yarn breaks or cuts of more than 10%, damage to the seams, deformations or damage caused by chemicals. In addition, tension belts must be discarded if the identification label is missing or illegible.
  • Ratchets must be discarded as soon as they show signs of breakage, fractures, deformations, cracks or severe corrosion are detected are detected.
  • One offset maturity at shackle exists if, if the function is restricted, the structure is deformed or the surface is damaged is a16>.
  • Round slings are ready for disposal when deformation occurs due to heat flow, when aggressive substances have affected the polyester round slings, or when the sheathing shows defects. Round slings are also ready for disposal if the label is no longer present or illegible.
  • Lifting straps must be discarded as soon as the load-bearing seams are damaged, deformation occurs due to heat flow, the straps have been damaged by aggressive substances, there are yarn breaks or cuts of more than 10% of the cross-section, or the label is missing or no longer legible.

Operating instructions Slinging equipment

When using lifting equipment and load-bearing equipment and one must observe the instructions in the operating manual. a8> it is essential to observe the operating instructions urgently required. Care must be taken to ensure that that the operating instructions are kept in an easily accessible place, at any time can be consulted .
