Construction protection mats for the protection of buildings and roofs

Construction protection mats have a wide range of uses. They protect gently sloping roofs, parking decks, green roofs, and are also suitable for terrace construction. Furthermore, they help protect the building structure from mechanical damage and weathering. Construction protection mats or membranes are a separating layer laid over sensitive building materials to protect them from mechanical damage. In construction, they are primarily used to protect waterproofing membranes (EPDM, PVC, and bitumen membranes). They can also be used for sound insulation and vibration damping. Furthermore, they are used for sealing and insulating green roofs, flat roofs, parking decks, terrace construction, and within buildings. The robust rubber granulate mats are also used in civil engineering projects, such as in underground garages, tunnels, or hydraulic structures like power plants or bridge piers. There, the construction protection mat fulfills an important protective function and contributes to the improved lifespan and safety of the structures. Construction protection mats are also used as a protective layer. These rubber mats made of rubber granulate are weather-resistant and very durable.

Regulations on the use of building protection mats

According to DIN 18195 Part 10, various structures must be protected against penetrating moisture. They are used particularly in bridges, mine tunnels, in garden and landscape construction, on flat roofs, and in transport infrastructure. Construction protection mats must be used in accordance with European standards to protect against:

• Soil moisture and non-accumulating seepage water (see DIN 18195-4),
• non-pressurized water and under intensively vegetated roof areas (18195-5),
• Water pressing from the outside and temporarily accumulating seepage water according to (18195-6),
• Water pressing from within (18195-7).

The mats are used, for example, as a sealant between bituminous roofing membranes and the upper substrate of gravel or vegetation to prevent damage to the bitumen. Construction protection mats are also used in the home and garden: under the pool, they protect the pool floor from damage caused by, for example, stones in the subsoil.

Caution: The building protection mat must not be confused with building protection coatings, which are used, for example, in foundation construction.

The relocation

The mats are cut to size with a utility knife or scissors and laid edge to edge. Ideally, they are fixed to the substrate and the joints using special adhesives or self-adhesive tape.
