The term edge protection refers to all materials placed between the goods being transported and the lifting or securing equipment used, such as lashing straps , ratchet straps , webbing slings , or round slings, during the transport or movement of loads using lifting equipment, pallet trucks, forklifts, cranes, or trolleys. Edge protectors prevent injuries to loading personnel and protect the securing and lifting equipment, as well as the surfaces of packaging, from damage, for example, at sharp corners. DIN 15020-1 "Lifting equipment; Principles for rope drives, calculation and design" defines a sharp edge as existing when "the edge radius (r) is smaller than the diameter (d) of the lifting equipment." Damage to lifting and securing equipment, such as chafing of lashing straps, can render them ineffective and poses immense risks to life and limb, for example, if the load falls during lifting. Minor damage to lashing materials and lifting straps, caused by sharp edges of the transported goods, leads to premature wear and tear and thus to premature discarding. Edge protectors in the form of edge protection angles or edge protection profiles therefore contribute to occupational safety and environmental protection. Edge protection also plays an extremely important role in load distribution during transport and lifting, as only its use can guarantee sufficient pretensioning force on the side facing away from the tensioning element.

Regulations and standards for edge protection

Several publications by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), the umbrella organization of German accident insurers, mandate the use of edge protection when securing loads (transport and lifting equipment). These rules comply with general technical standards and occupational safety regulations and also have the force of law. Failure to comply can result in criminal prosecution in the event of an accident or during an inspection by the authorities. Examples of these DGUV rules include DGUV Information 209-013 - Slingers, Information 209-003 - Metal Construction Assembly Work, and DGUV Information 215-213 - Loads Above Persons, Chapter 2.

Edge protectors sold by the meter. These sturdy edge protectors, with their large contact surface, secure and stabilize storage and transport, especially of soft packaging and small packages, such as those on pallets. Angled edge protectors are ideal for bagged goods, big bags, octabins, and building materials like bricks. These edge protectors are also suitable as corner protectors and impact protection when moving furniture such as tables (table edge protectors) and cabinets. The plastic edge protectors are available as profiles with leg lengths of 190 x 190 mm in orange or 120 x 120 mm in blue. Cargo Safe edge protector. This flexible and strong edge protector is suitable for strapping bands and webbing with a width of 25 mm to 50 mm. The light weight and compact dimensions of these edge protectors allow for easy storage – this edge protector even fits in the glove compartment!

Octagonal edge protector BCP-Flex. This octagonal black edge protector has a material thickness of 4.5 mm and a tear-resistant fabric reinforcement, as well as an "emergency brake" for loosened straps. Thanks to its fabric reinforcement, this edge protector secures even the heaviest and sharp-edged loads and is suitable for strap widths up to 50 mm.

JUMBO edge protector, 185x140 mm in black. This robust and durable plastic edge protector, made of robust PP plastic, is ideal for securing the corners and edges of heavy loads and is therefore essential equipment for load securing in every truck, as well as when using lifting straps and round slings in lifting techniques. The raised load points on both sides of the edge protector distribute the pressure evenly across the surface. The raised sides of the Jumbo edge protector ensure optimal guidance and fixation of the lashing strap. The edge protector is extremely space-saving due to its stackable design. Metal edge protectors with rollers. When lashing down cargo, the pretensioning force is not automatically transferred to the opposite side. According to DIN EN 12195-1 (02/2008), when using a ratchet, a force transfer of 50% to the opposite side per lashing strap must be expected, as the friction loss at the cargo edges is too high. DEKRA tests, according to the test report, showed an average tensioning force transfer of 97% to the opposite side when using our galvanized stainless steel metal edge protectors for load securing.

Plastic edge protector plate , 200 x 100 mm. This edge protector plate consists of a durable solid plate with two elongated holes for threading straps. As a strap protector and edge protector, it safeguards vulnerable cargo edges when a rigid plastic edge protector or corner guard is insufficient, for example, on concrete, wooden, machinery, machine parts, and steel components at angles other than 90°. This edge protector is available in various hardnesses (Shore A 40° to 90°) and in brown, black, white, and other colors upon request. Wooden container edge protector , 850 x 185 x 25 mm. This wooden container edge protector features a non-slip surface. Its flexible radius adapts perfectly to the corner of the load, ensuring even distribution of forces and increasing the contact area. This edge protector is ideal for loading IBCs, buckets, drums, cartons, and pallets.
