Metal edge protection

Edge protection profiles or corner protectors made of various materials protect the corners and edges of cargo, as well as the lashing straps used for tie-down or direct lashing, or the lifting straps or round slings used during lifting operations. Damage to securing devices, such as splicing of tensioning and lashing straps, can render them ineffective and poses significant risks to life and limb, for example, if the load tips over or falls during transport. Edge protection is therefore an essential aid for load securing. Its use is not only recommended but also mandated by guidelines and regulations. Metal edge protection is usually made of stainless steel or anodized aluminum and offers considerable advantages over edge protectors made of plastic, EPDM, wood, or cardboard. Firstly, metal edge protection has a significantly longer lifespan because it requires less frequent retensioning during transport. This factor significantly increases the cost-effectiveness of an edge protector. Furthermore, metal edge protection significantly improves the transmission of tension force and thus contributes considerably to the stabilization of the cargo. Aluminum edge protection is also used as a profile or strip to protect the edges of furniture and upholstery, as well as stairs and floor coverings (tiles, parquet, laminate).

Edge protection in guidelines and regulations

Section 22 "Load" of the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) stipulates that loads must always be secured during transport in such a way that they cannot slip, roll, or fall off the load carrier (truck, trailer, container). Furthermore, they must not generate avoidable noise that could irritate the driver and other road users and impair their concentration. Regarding the load securing measures to be applied in a specific case, the law refers to "recognized rules of technology," which are contained in regulations and guidelines.

These regulations and guidelines can be found in European standards (DIN EN), in publications of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV), the umbrella organization of German accident insurers, in guideline 2700 of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) and in information from employers' liability insurance associations.

DIN EN 12195-2 "Lashing straps made of synthetic fibers" specifies that webbing must be protected from friction, abrasion, and damage from sharp load edges by using protective covers and/or edge protectors. According to DGUV Information 209-003 "Metal construction assembly work," lifting slings must not be pulled over sharp edges unless these are protected by edge protectors. The German Social Accident Insurance Institution for Transport and Traffic (DGUV) published the guideline "Loading and Securing" for professional drivers, which explicitly recommends the use of corner protectors to reduce force loss at the lashing strap deflections and to protect the lashing materials.

Metal edge protectors in the online shop for load securing

Our product range offers a wide selection of different angle profiles, edge protectors, and PVC edge protectors for protecting corners and surfaces. Angles and profiles are available in high-quality, robust plastic, wood, and anodized stainless steel, as well as in many colors (black, blue, white, transparent). Our edge protectors are available individually or in sets with quantity discounts. Thickness, length, colors, and other information can be found on the respective product pages.

Stainless steel angle brackets for increased clamping force transmission

The European standard DIN EN 12195-1 (02/2008) states that when using a ratchet, a force transmission of 50% to the opposite side of each lashing strap must be expected due to high friction loss at the edges of the load. According to the test report, DEKRA tests with our galvanized stainless steel metal edge protectors showed an average force transmission of 97% to the opposite side. Our stainless steel edge protectors thus offer greater protection through increased stability during lashing. In contrast, when using a ratchet strap, a force transmission of only slightly more than 50% can be expected. The balanced force transmission is ensured by two pulleys with sealed deep groove ball bearings. These metal corner protectors feature a variable bearing angle, allowing them to adapt optimally to the shape of the load. The legs of our silver stainless steel angle bracket measure 180 x 180 millimeters and are compatible with lashing and tensioning straps with widths of 25, 35, and 50 millimeters. Installation is particularly easy thanks to the raised strap guide. Our stainless steel edge protector is especially suitable for companies in the construction industry, drywall construction, and heavy-duty logistics. Whether for concrete slabs, prefabricated building elements, steel or aluminum panels, our stainless steel edge protector is the ideal corner protection for your transport needs.
