  Although there are already voices saying that this is just another pointless regulation designed to annoy transport companies, this is not the case. Anti-slip mats were already being used in the past to secure certain loads better and more effectively. However, anything made of rubber that might have had an anti-slip effect was used for this purpose. Even simple building protection mats have been used for load securing. Even today, cheap rubber products with a high proportion of hollow spaces and consisting mainly of rubber granulate are often used. Although anti-slip mats manufactured in this way are cheap to purchase, the follow-up costs are enormous. A rubber mat of this inferior quality does not meet the requirements of VDI 2700 Sheet 15. They have difficulty withstanding the special loads and disintegrate very quickly into their constituent parts. However, a mat manufactured in accordance with the specifications of VDI 2700 Sheet 15 can easily withstand these loads. Once you start looking into who's responsible for securing loads, you quickly realise that a lot of people can be held liable. But you also need to know that there are different rules that apply. In practice, most people think that the driver is the only one responsible for securing loads. If the driver secures the load but uses an anti-slip mat made of inferior material, then others may also be held responsible. This would include the employer, who, as the vehicle owner, is required to provide the driver with suitable equipment for securing the load. If savings are made here for the wrong reasons, the company will end up footing the bill. In the event of damage, the trail may even lead back to the seller of the inferior rubber mat if it can be proven that it does not comply with the guidelines of VDI 2700 Sheet 15.
