When do lashing chains need to be replaced?
Lashing chains are particularly powerful and break-resistant devices for securing loads, which are especially suitable for large or heavy loads. However, similar to tensioning and lashing straps, lashing chains also have a prescribed replacement interval, which determines when the chains are considered unusable (ready for replacement) and must be replaced. The European chain standard DIN EN 12195-3 and VDI guideline 2700 3.1 specify exactly when a lashing chain is considered to be ready for disposal.
The criteria for lashing chain testing (when they need replacing)
A lashing chain is considered ready for disposal if one of the following cases occurs:
- The chain, a chain link or an accessory part has elongated (= stretched) by more than 5%.
- Severe wear has occurred on the chain links due to abrasion. This is the case when the average link thickness is more than 10% below the nominal thickness at a permanent point on the chain.
- The lashing chain shows clear cuts, deep notches, grooves, cracks, excessive corrosion (e.g. rust scars) or heat discolouration, or signs of subsequent welding work, as well as bent or twisted chain links.
- The load hook is expanded by more than 10% of its nominal value. You can tell this is the case if the hook safety catch no longer engages smoothly with the hook tip (form fit).
- An illegible component designation, non-standard information, or the absence of the lashing chain's identification tag can also lead to it being discarded.
Standardised lashing chains protect against premature wear
In order to rule out any defects in the chains at an early stage and ensure maximum load security, you should use lashing chains that are standardised and optimally adapted to the stresses and strains of everyday transport. In our shop, you will find both single-piece and two-piece lashing chains and sling chains that have been manufactured in accordance with EU law and VDI guidelines. All items are highly resilient and are standardised in accordance with DIN EN 12195-3 and manufactured from round steel chains in grade 8. With these powerhouses, you can secure loads of up to 10,000 daN. All chains are also resistant to chemicals and oil.
