According to Section 22, Paragraph 1 of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), the legislator stipulates that cargo, including cargo securing devices and loading equipment, must be stowed and secured in such a way that it cannot slip, tip over, roll back and forth, or fall off, even during emergency braking or a sudden evasive maneuver. In this context, the recognized technical rules must be observed. Examples include the VDI 2700 series, which represents the technically recognized standards in Germany. Internationally, EN 12195 is used as the basis.

Three types of cargo securing are described in the guidelines and standards:

1. Form-fit cargo securing
2. Friction-locking cargo securing
3. Combined cargo securing
