Common deficiencies in load securing
Inadequate load securing causes hundreds of millions of pounds worth of damage in Germany every year, endangering not only valuable cargo but also the health of other road users and the environment. Load securing is required by law in Section 22 of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) and in national and European directives.
What needs to be considered when loading a trailer, lorry or container?
The Road Traffic Regulations stipulate that loads in lorries, trailers or containers must be secured in such a way that they cannot roll, slip or fall off the load carrier. When securing loads, it must also be ensured that the freight in the vehicle does not generate any avoidable noise. The car/lorry driver, the shipper and the consignor are responsible for the safety of the load and compliance with traffic guidelines and regulations. In the event of a technical roadside inspection or visual inspection, and especially in the event of an accident involving property damage or personal injury, inadequate securing of the freight in the transporter will be punished by the competent authorities (police, public order office, customs) with fines, points in the central register of the Federal Motor Transport Authority and even prison sentences.
Significant deficiencies in load securing
- Insufficient quantity of lashing materials
- Incorrect use or use of damaged lashing straps
- Lack of edge protection or anti-slip mats
- Transport packaging does not allow for proper load securing
- Incorrect positioning of the load in the vehicle
Dangerous defects are:
- Inadequate and defective side planks and components such as lashing points or restraint systems
- dangerous undershoot of the necessary safety forces
- Excessive distance between the transported goods and the walls of the transport carrier
- technical defects and incorrect components
