High friction is important for securing loads


In practice, it is often the case that lorry drivers are left to their own devices when it comes to securing loads. However, many factors need to be taken into account in order to secure loads safely and reliably. A wealth of useful information can be found in the VDI guideline -2700 ff. or obtained from our Lasi guide. Unsecured loads can be life-threatening in both private and commercial use. During emergency braking or sudden evasive manoeuvres, loads can shift or loose parts can become deadly projectiles. With our anti-slip mats or anti-slip pads, you can reduce the risk to a minimum. Coefficient of friction and anti-slip mats – how do they work together? Without load securing with anti-slip mats, for example, 10 times more lashing straps are needed to secure your load than with them. Accordingly, the combination of load securing and anti-slip mats now goes hand in hand and has become an indispensable part of professional load securing today. It is therefore an absolute must. Please note that load securing is also possible in combination with lashing straps, clamping beams, load securing nets, webbing nets, locking bars, etc. Especially when vertical forces act on the load, it can slip and thus no longer offer any protection. We explain the coefficient of friction and the friction coefficient, also known as the friction factor. We also provide the most important data in our table of friction coefficients.

The anti-slip mat and its coefficient of friction


Wherever general cargo is transported and pallets are used, load securing with anti-slip mats is part of everyday use, as their friction force is utilised. They are clearly visible and of sufficient size on the floor of the loading area. They completely "separate" the general cargo from the transport floor, as this is the only way to achieve the desired coefficient of friction. It is important that all contact surfaces are completely on the anti-slip mats. Even small areas that are not properly supported, known as mixed friction, can lead to a significant deterioration in load securing. Here, too, we would like to point out that, in addition to checking the correct friction coefficients, securing is also possible with other approved aids such as lashing straps, webbing nets and locking bars.

Anti-slip mat Coefficient of friction Measurement – Here's how!


An important parameter for load securing is the coefficient of friction. This is the most important factor when it comes to loading general cargo. As you will quickly discover, there are many tables and ways to calculate or determine this important load securing value. To ensure that everything fits "at least approximately", you should know the coefficient of friction of your goods. It is important that the shipper, as the manufacturer or sender, passes this information on to the transport company. Based on this data, it is possible to ensure professional loading and good friction values with appropriate load securing using lashing straps and anti-slip mats. We have listed some sample tables with key figures below to illustrate this. Many shippers are now aware of their responsibility, which means that suitable loading instructions are provided for each load. It would be desirable if load securing were seen as an integral part of quality assurance. This is because the costs incurred by damaged products or idle lorries are usually higher and justify the securing effort. Currently, many friction coefficients for material combinations are still missing or have not yet been published. This means that if you want to measure the friction coefficient, you can only refer to reference values for securing lorry loads.

Pro tip: Avoid getting it dirty


During inspections in particular, load securing must be clearly visible and comprehensible to the inspectors. Avoid contamination of any kind, as this reduces the friction coefficient of the anti-slip mats and, depending on the severity of the contamination, may even render them ineffective. Heavily contaminated or damaged mats must be disposed of and replaced with new anti-slip mats. Our MT "Premium" anti-slip rollers are suitable for heavy loads and uneven vehicle floors.
